UEFA Europa League competition format

The first edition of the UEFA Europa League took place in 1971 when the winner of the first tournament was Tottenham Hotspur. The best 24 teams qualify for the main competition. The main competition consists of 160 teams divided into 12 groups. The elimination phase includes 6 rounds which serve as the knockout stages. The best teams qualify for the second phase of the competition. The final stage of the competition consists of the playoffs in which the 32 most successful teams compete for the title of the UEFA Europa League competition. 1 team team qualify for the Champions League main tournament or preliminary qualifiers.
